Robert “Bob” J. Matthews, 89 of Vienna, W.Va., passed away peacefully on August 6, 2012 at his home.He was born December 10, 1922 in San Francisco, California, a son of the late Charles Matthews and Pearl Mason Matthews. Robert was a US Navy veteran having served during World War II and the Bombing of Pearl Harbor as a First Class Gunners Mate. Following his honorable military discharge, he went to work and later retired from the U.S. Department of Justice as the Director of Training. He enjoyed woodworking and loved spending his free time on the water.Robert is survived by his beloved wife, Anna Mae Coen Matthews, whom he married January 16, 1971; two sons; Robert Matthews of San Francisco, CA and Steven Matthews (Linda) also of San Francisco, CA; one daughter; Pamela Carman (Michael) of Parkersburg, W.Va., one granddaughter, Janine Matthews; one grandson, Scott Carman (Jennifer); and three great-grandchildren, Alexander, Johnathan, and Elizabeth Carman .He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.Memorial services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 11, 2012 at Wesley United Methodist Church, 497 21st Street, Vienna, W.Va. with Rev. Daniel Bryan officiating. Following memorial services, full military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 15 of Parkersburg.
