Hattie Mae Garrett

Hattie B. Garrett, 89, formerly of Vienna, W.Va., passed away on June 28th, 2011 at Seton Medical Center, Austin, Texas with her family by her side.Hattie was born July 5, 1921 in Clay County, W.Va, the daughter of Julia (Igo) and Joseph Belcher. Since 2009 she resided at the home of her daughter and granddaughter in Austin, Texas. Hattie graduated from Webster Springs High School, Webster Springs, W.Va. and completed undergraduate studies at Glenville State Teachers College and West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon. She earned a Master's degree in elementary education at West Virginia University in Morgantown. She taught elementary school at several Webster County schools, including Camden-on-Gauley and Diana. After re-locating to Ohio, she taught at Taft Elementary school in Lakewood, Ohio, where she was named Teacher of The Year in 1960. She was a 4-H Leader in Webster County for several years and was a member of the West Virginia 4-H All-Stars.In addition to her parents, Hattie was preceded in death by her son, Cody J. Garrett;husbands, Fred Roland Garrett and Harold Lee Lewis; and brothers and sisters, William “Billy” Harrison (Callie) Belcher, Joanna Davis (Hoff) Butcher, James Edward “Eddie” Belcher, Bessie (Bill) Henderson, Ira Erwin Belcher, George (Helen) Belcher, Charles Anderson (Faye) Belcher, Blanche Olive (Ocel) Porter, Violet Ida (Russ) Markle, Virgil Lee (Helen) (Mary) Belcher, Zelma Irene (Harlan) Hensley, and Joe Belcher, Jr. She is survived by daughter, Patricia K. Garrett, Austin, Texas; beloved grandchildren, Susan Patricia Fafrak, Austin, Texas, and Paul Harold (Jacki) Fafrak, Ravenna, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Bradley Paul, Jacob Andrew, and Carlee Colsan Fafrak, Ravenna, Ohio; nieces and nephews, Thelma Mull Spatz, Bill (Bettye) Henderson, Joann Morrison, Harlan (Trudy) Hensley, Kay Large, George Belcher, Jr., Ron (Sheila) Belcher, Joan Smith, Wanda Wamsley, and Glenda Diller; several great-nieces and nephews; and loving friends and extended family. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 2, 2011 at the 36th Street Church of Christ, Vienna, W.Va. with Mark Mason officiating. Burial will follow at the Hacker Valley Cemetery, Hacker Valley, W.Va. (Webster County) at 4:00 p.m.Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 3005 Grand Central Ave. Vienna, W.Va.Hattie demonstrated daily her gentle and loving spirit and placed her faith in God throughout her life.Hattie was a member of the 36th Street Church of Christ, Vienna, W.Va. and the family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to the 36th Street Church of Christ.
