Harold Charles Davis

Harold Charles Davis, 94 of Parkersburg, W.Va. passed away April 17, 2013 at Camden Clark Medical Center, Memorial Campus.He was born November 5, 1918 in Ripley, Jackson County, W.Va. son of the late Cyrus A. and Effie A. Chancey Davis.Harold was employed by the B&O Railroad and retired in 1978. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946 as Coxswain during WWII. He completed basic training at the U.S. Naval Center in Chicago, Illinois, Navy Distribution Center in Shoemaker, California, and Outgoing Center, Treasure Island in San Francisco, California. He served aboard the USS Admiral R. E. Koontz, USS Jeremiah M. Dailey, USS Navarro (supply and troop ship), USS LCT-Flotilla 14 group, 40 Amphibian Assault Forces, and U.S. Pacific 5th Fleet-Landing Craft. He was stationed in Hawaii, Ulithii, Palau Group of the Western Carolinas, Anguar, Peleliu Koror, Malakal, Guam, Manas and across the equator. Harold was awarded the American Theater, Asiatic Pacific Theater, American Defense, and Victory.After the surrender of Japan he served as Flotilla mailman and driver for the Flotilla Commander until he was released from service. Harold was thankful to God for His protection during his military service. He was honorably discharged at Baimbridge, Maryland.His grandparents served in the Revolutionary War (great, great, great grandfather), the War of 1812 (great, great grandfather), the Civil War (great grandfather and grandfather), and direct father to son except WWI. Harold served in WWII.He enjoyed woodworking and did custom framing for twenty years, producing many pieces for friends and relatives. He was a member of the North End Church of Christ. He previously served as an elder for the Lynn Street Church of Christ.Harold is survived by two daughters, Theresa “Terry” Phares (Okey), of Parkersburg, W.Va. and Sandra Sandusky of Vienna, W.Va.; one son, Michael Davis (Holly) of Ashburn, Va.; grandchildren, Jeff A. Phares, John D. Phares, James R. Buskirk Jr., Gregory A. Buskirk, Lisa A. Barnes, Kathryn Sandusky, Zachary Davis, Kristin Hand; and numerous great-grandchildren.In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Madeline “Madge” Davis; a daughter, Sally Jo Davis; one brother, Paul Davis; and five sisters, Erma Fouse, Naomi Giffen, Joanne Bower, Bette Sweeney and June Martin.Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 400 Green St. Parkersburg, W.Va. with Wirt Cook officiating. Burial will follow at Parkersburg Memorial Gardens with full military rites by American Legion Post 15 of Parkersburg. Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home. The family would like to thank Dr. Nik Shah and all his staff, Marilyn McClure, and the medical staff at Camden Clark Medical Center, Memorial Campus.
