Date and Time of Service: Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at 11AM – Pike St.posted 7/18/2010 at 6:44:51 PMGladys Reese Marshall, 93, of Parkersburg, passed away July 18, 2010, at Worthington Manor in Parkersburg.She was born June 14, 1917, in Barberton, Ohio, the daughter of Ralph and Helen Reese. From 1948 until 1963 she and her husband, Arden, owned and operated the Pleasant Hill Grocery in Deerwalk. She is remembered by her customers for her friendly smile and willingness to help those in need. She also worked as a cook at the Pleasant Valley Elementary School and at the Pleasant Valley Trading Company.Gladys' favorite recreation was fishing. She smiled from ear to ear when she pulled a big bass out of Bull Creek or the lake at Mountwood Park. She had a green thumb and enjoyed giving tours of her colorful flower beds. Her enthusiasm for bird watching resulted in long lists of birds sighted. Weekend evenings found her playing enthusiastic games of canasta with family and friends. She still found time to work word puzzles and crochet.She is survived by one daughter, Betty Marshall Leavengood, of Parkersburg, three grandchildren: Cheryl Graham of Wenatchee, Washington; Rodney Graham (Melissa), of Davidson, North Carolina, and Christine Graham of Frankfurt, Germany; three step-grandchildren: Joseph Leavengood (Edie) of Hondo, Texas; David Leavengood (Cheryl) of Henderson, Nevada; and Steven Leavengood (JoAnn) of Longmont, Colorado; two great-grandchildren, Marshall and Emma Claire Graham of Davidson, North Carolina; three step-great grandchildren: Jacob and Sarah Leavengood of Hondo, Texas, and Steven Leavengood of Henderson, Nevada.Also surviving are her sister, Bessie Beckner (Paul), of Wirt County; her brother, James Reese (Marilyn), of Parkersburg; a sister-in-law, Lucille Reese of Deerwalk; a brother-in-law, Ray Deem, of Dutch Ridge, and a half-sister, Connie Reese Armistead (Charles), of Charleston, West Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Arden L. Marshall, five sisters: Opal Reese, Mildred Reese Goldsmith (Inman), Ethel Reese (Warren), Thelma Reese McCaleb (Jerry); and Ruth Reese Deem; one brother, Lewis “Dick” Reese; one son-in-law, John Leavengood; one sister-in-law, Loretta Reese, and two nephews, Dale Deem and Darrell “Hop” Deem.She attended the Pleasant Hill Methodist Church at Deerwalk, West Virginia, for most of her life. For the last several years she attended the First Church of the Nazarene in Parkersburg, West Virginia.Funeral services will be held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 2333 Pike Street, Parkersburg, at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 21, 2010, followed by burial at the Old German Cemetery on Route 50 near Mountwood Park. Following the burial, lunch will be served at the Deerwalk Fire Station at the intersection of Route 50 and Route 31. Everyone is welcome. Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 20, 2010, from 2-4 and from 6-8p.m. at the funeral home.In lieu of flowers, she requested that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 3901 Briscoe Road, Parkersburg, West Virginia 26104.
