Abner Jerome Phillips, Jr., 88, of Parkersburg, W.Va. went home to be with the Lord on Oct. 22, 2011, at Parkersburg Care and Rehabilitation.He was born March 18, 1923, in Ritchie County, a son of the late Abner J. Sr. and Edna Jenkins Phillips.Abner was a 1942 graduate of Cairo High School and later retired after 31 years of service as a mail carrier with the USPS. He enjoyed hunting, his family, was an avid rifle shooter, a New York Yankees fan, and was also a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, having served in WWII in Dover, England. He was Protestant by faith.Surviving is one daughter, Sandra Hazelett (Terry) of Parkersburg, W.Va; three sons, David Phillips (Debbie) and Abner J. Phillips III (Fern), both of Parkersburg, W.Va., and Kendall Phillips (Beverly) of Edmond, Okla.; two stepdaughters, Gina Richards (Jim) of Vienna, W.Va., and Beth Pickens of Parkersburg, W.Va.; two sisters, Georgia Deem of Little Hocking, Ohio and Emogene Bookman of Ky.; one brother, Calvin Phillips of Wallace, W.Va.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Twyla I. Echard Phillips; his second wife, Eleanor McDonald Phillips; one granddaughter, Kendra Phillips; three sisters; and four brothers.Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011 at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 2333 Pike St., Parkersburg, W.Va. with Pastor Roger Benson officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen North Cemetery.The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.The family wishes to thank Parkersburg Care and Rehabilitation and Amedysis Hospice for the care given to Abner.
